Clinical Significance Sjögren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disease of unknown etiology occurring predominantly (over 90%) in women in the fourth to sixth decades of life. SSB antibodies have a high specificity for the sicca complex, which results from a failure of secretion by lacrimal, salivary and other glands. SSA antibodies may also be detected in cases of congenital heart block, neonatal lupus and in approximately 30% of SLE patients.
